Connecting from Tamarindo means running east through Guanacaste, then ascending the Sardinal–Guacimal gravel road into the cloud — a 3½-hour drive that takes you from sea-level surf town to mountain mist in one transfer.
How long is the drive from Tamarindo to Monteverde?
Plan on roughly 3½ to 4¼ hours for the 145 km (90 mile) drive. The first 2½ hours runs smoothly on Guanacaste highway; the last 30 minutes is the Sardinal–Guacimal ascent — a well-graded gravel climb that our drivers run weekly.

Paved Guanacaste highway for most of the route, with a gravel ascent to Monteverde in the final stretch. The drive runs from the Pacific coast up into the Tilarán cloud forest mountains.
