La Fortuna sits at the base of the Arenal volcano — the cone has been dormant since 2010 but the geothermal hot springs are still hot, and the lodges keep their volcano views. Connecting from Puerto Viejo means crossing the country west — from the Caribbean coast through the Braulio Carrillo mountain pass, across the Central Valley, and north to the Arenal lowlands.
How long is the drive from Puerto Viejo to La Fortuna?
Plan on roughly 6 to 7 hours for the drive from the Caribbean to the Arenal valley. The first 90 minutes runs north along the Caribbean coast to Limón; the middle section is the Braulio Carrillo mountain pass and the Central Valley crossing; the final stretch drops north into the Arenal lowlands with the volcano coming into view in the last hour.
Is the road from Puerto Viejo to La Fortuna safe?
Paved highway end to end, via Limón, the Braulio Carrillo mountain pass, and the San Carlos road north to La Fortuna. The Braulio Carrillo section can get foggy in the afternoon during green season — our drivers time the crossing to better conditions.
