Connecting from Samara means leaving the Nicoya Peninsula, running east through Guanacaste, and turning north into the Arenal lowlands — a 4½-hour drive that combines a family-friendly Pacific beach with the volcano region.

Plan on roughly 4½ to 5¼ hours for the drive from Samara to La Fortuna. The first 90 minutes runs on Nicoya Peninsula roads through cattle country; the middle section joins the Guanacaste highway east; the final stretch climbs into the Tilarán range and drops into the Arenal valley.
Is the road from Samara to La Fortuna safe?
Paved highway via the Nicoya Peninsula, Cañas, and Tilarán. The Nicoya sections are paved but narrower than the main highway; the rest is well-maintained main road.
