La Fortuna sits at the base of the Arenal volcano — the cone has been dormant since 2010 but the geothermal hot springs are still hot, and the lodges keep their volcano views. Connecting from Nosara is a 5½-hour drive: out of the Nicoya Peninsula, through Guanacaste, and into the Arenal valley — one of the longer cross-region transfers in our network, and the only practical way to do it in one day.

Plan on roughly 5½ to 6½ hours for the 245 km (152 mile) drive. The first 90 minutes runs on Nicoya Peninsula roads — paved but narrower — until you join the Guanacaste highway.
