Plan on roughly 5 to 5¾ hours for the 250 km (155 mile) drive — this is the longest LIR transfer we run. Guanacaste highways stay light for the first 2-3 hours, then you cross into the Nicoya Peninsula and the road gets narrower and slower.
Is the road from Liberia Airport to Santa Teresa safe?
Paved Guanacaste highway for the first 60% of the drive, then well-maintained but narrower Nicoya Peninsula road for the rest. The drive runs through Guanacaste, the peninsula interior, and the Pacific coast.
Is it safe to travel from Liberia Airport to Santa Teresa at night?
Yes — but the Nicoya Peninsula sections are slower at night and there's less to see, so we recommend daytime arrivals when possible. LIR mostly handles daytime flights anyway.
