The route from SJO Airport follows the Pan-American Highway (Route 1) west through San Ramon before turning north into the Central Highlands. The road climbs through the Vara Blanca corridor, passing between Poas and Barva volcanoes, then descends into the northern lowlands toward La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano. Expect approximately 2.5 to 3 hours of travel through varied terrain — from the Central Valley's coffee-growing hills to dense tropical forest near Arenal.
