Route Overview: La Fortuna to SJO Airport
The reverse of the classic arrival route. From La Fortuna you cross the San Carlos plains and climb back into the Central Valley mountains before descending into San José and the airport. Approximately 3 hours. Most travelers do this on departure day, often with an early morning pickup to catch flights.
Road Conditions
Same paved highway as the inbound route. Generally easier driving in this direction.
Plan extra time if you have a flight. Google says 2h 45min but morning traffic entering San José metro area can add 30-45 minutes. Our drivers recommend leaving 4 hours before international flights.

Local Tip
For early flights (before 10am), book a 4am or 5am pickup. Most hotels in La Fortuna do early breakfast boxes — ask the night before. Bring layers, mountain sections get cool at sunrise.
Budget Tip
If your flight isn't until evening, this is a great day to upgrade to Discovery Transfer. Adds $119 and ~3 hours but lets you stop at La Paz Waterfalls or Poás Volcano on the way — turning a wasted travel day into one last adventure before flying out.
Insider Recommendation
If you have flexibility, ask your driver to stop at the Doka Estate coffee tour (about 30 min from SJO) for breakfast and a quick coffee tasting. Costa Rican coffee straight from the source — better than anything you'll get at the airport.
