Should You Upgrade to a Discovery Shuttle? An Honest Guide for Costa Rica Travelers

Can't Wait TravelApril 14, 20268 min read

Both our Standard and Discovery shuttles are 100% private. The real question is whether you want the drive itself to be part of your trip — and the honest answer isn't always yes.

People ask me almost every day which option they should pick — Standard or Discovery. And the truth is, the answer isn't always Discovery. Sometimes paying more doesn't make your trip better. It just makes it longer when you needed it shorter.

After nearly 20 years moving people around Costa Rica, I've learned that the right choice depends less on your budget and more on what kind of day you're actually walking into. So before you book, let me walk you through how to decide.

First, Let's Clear Something Up

One thing I want to get out of the way because it confuses a lot of people: both options are private. Standard is not the shared shuttle. There's no shared option with us at all. Same van, same bilingual driver, same door-to-door service either way. Nobody else is riding with you.

The difference isn't the vehicle or the privacy. The difference is what happens during the drive.

What You Get with the Standard Private Shuttle

The Standard is a real private shuttle, not a stripped-down version. It includes everything you need to get between destinations comfortably:

  • Private air-conditioned van — just your group, no strangers
  • Bilingual driver who knows every road in the country
  • Door-to-door service, hotel to hotel
  • Free WiFi on board
  • Cold bottled water
  • Up to one hour for stops along the way if you need them
  • Free schedule flexibility on most routes

For a lot of travelers, this is exactly what they need. Nothing extra, nothing missing.

What Changes with the Discovery Experience

Discovery is the same private shuttle, but the drive itself becomes the experience. Your driver stops being just a driver and becomes your guide for the day. Here's what that actually means on the road:

  • Scenic stops at viewpoints, bridges, and small mountain towns along the route
  • Your driver tells you about Costa Rica as you go — history, wildlife, culture, local life
  • Flexibility to stop and eat wherever you want, no rush
  • Time for photos at the spots most tourists drive right past
  • A welcome kit with Costa Rican craft beers, San Pellegrino, and a tropical snack box
  • The day runs on your rhythm, not the clock

Done right on the correct route, a Discovery private shuttle can replace a full day tour. That's the part most people don't think about when they see the upgrade price.

When the Standard Is Actually the Smarter Choice

I tell guests this all the time and they're usually surprised I say it out loud: there are plenty of situations where the Standard is the better move. Some of them:

  • You're landing at night. After a full travel day, you don't want a three-hour tour. You want your bed.
  • You're traveling with small kids who are already fried from the flight.
  • The route is short or mostly urban — something like SJO to Alajuela.
  • You have a tour or activity booked the same day and you need to arrive on time with energy.
  • You've been to Costa Rica before and you've already seen the scenic stops along this route.
  • You're on the last leg of your trip and you just want to get to the airport cleanly.

In all of those cases, paying extra for scenic stops doesn't add anything to your trip. It just extends a ride you wanted to be shorter.

When the Discovery Is Absolutely Worth It

And then there are the days where skipping Discovery is the part that doesn't make sense. Situations where I push guests toward the upgrade even when they're hesitating:

  • It's your first day in Costa Rica and you've got sunlight to burn
  • You're on a long scenic route like SJO to La Fortuna, or Arenal to Monteverde
  • You're celebrating — honeymoon, anniversary, a milestone birthday
  • You don't have a day tour booked and want the private shuttle to do double duty
  • You're traveling with teens or adults who actually want to stop and take photos
  • You want the driver to show you the real Costa Rica, not just the highway between hotels

The guests who regret not upgrading are almost always the ones who did SJO to La Fortuna on their first day without stopping anywhere. They tell me about it on the ride back.

The Routes Where Each Option Shines

Not every route is created equal. Some drives are made for Discovery. Others don't benefit much from it. Here's the honest breakdown based on the routes we run every week.

SJO Airport → La Fortuna (Arenal)

This is the number one route for Discovery. The SJO to La Fortuna private shuttle is about three and a half hours of mountain scenery, passing the Poás Volcano viewpoint (weather permitting), the painted town of Zarcero, waterfalls along the Río Toro, and little sodas where you'll eat the best gallo pinto of the trip. If you're landing in the morning or early afternoon, this is the one I'd upgrade. If you're landing at night, keep it Standard and save the scenery for the way back.

La Fortuna → Monteverde

Discovery shines here. The La Fortuna to Monteverde route skirts Lake Arenal with the volcano behind you, passes through small dairy towns around Tilarán, and climbs into the cloud forest. Driving through all that without stopping feels like a waste. This is one of the prettiest drives in Central America.

SJO → Manuel Antonio

The SJO to Manuel Antonio private shuttle is worth the upgrade if you stop at the Tárcoles crocodile bridge and maybe grab lunch in Jacó on the way. If you're just trying to get to the beach as fast as possible, Standard does the job.

LIR Airport → Tamarindo, Nosara, or Santa Teresa

Most of our LIR arrivals go Standard, honestly. People usually land after long flights, the terrain is flatter, and they want to get to the beach. Routes like LIR to Nosara work great as a relaxed Standard private shuttle. But if you're landing early and want to stop for lunch at a beach town on the way, Discovery is a nice option.

La Fortuna → Manuel Antonio

Long route, good Discovery candidate. The La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio drive works great with stops at a waterfall or the Tárcoles bridge to break up the ride.

SJO → Monteverde

The SJO to Monteverde route is worth Discovery for the climb into the cloud forest. The approach to Monteverde itself is an experience.

Puerto Viejo and the Caribbean Coast

For the SJO to Puerto Viejo private shuttle, Standard is usually the better call. The route through Limón is more urban and the scenery doesn't open up the way it does on the Arenal or Monteverde sides.

How to Decide in 30 Seconds

If you only read one section of this post, read this one. Four quick questions:

  • Is it your first day in Costa Rica with daylight ahead of you? → Discovery.
  • Are you landing at night or exhausted from travel? → Standard.
  • Is the route long and scenic (Arenal, Monteverde, the Pacific coast)? → Discovery.
  • Is the route short or mostly urban? → Standard.

That's it. That's the decision tree.

The Bottom Line

We built these two options on purpose. Not every drive needs to be a tour, and not every guest needs to pay extra. The Standard is a real private shuttle that does exactly what a private shuttle should do. The Discovery is for the days when the road itself is worth experiencing and you've got the time to enjoy it.

Pick the one that fits the day you're actually walking into. That's the whole trick.

Check prices for your route and pick the option that fits your day.
