Route Overview: SJO Airport to Tamarindo
The route follows the Interamericana Highway (Route 1) northwest through the Central Valley and across the Guanacaste lowlands. After Liberia, a secondary highway leads to the coast. The journey takes 4.5 to 5 hours and passes through the transition from tropical highlands to Guanacaste's distinctive dry forest landscape — cattle country, wide-open plains, and the signature guanacaste trees.
