Travel Time Reality Check
Google says 3-3.5 hours but expect 4. The unpaved road out of Monteverde takes 45 minutes just for the first stretch, then it's mountain roads down to the Interamericana. From there the highway to SJO has San Ramón traffic. Leave early for flights.

Leave before 7am if you can. The morning light coming down from the cloud forest is magical — fog burning off, birds everywhere. Once you hit the highway, grab a coffee in Sarchí if you have time. The artisan market there is touristy but the painted oxcarts are a real Costa Rican tradition.
