Travel Time Reality Check
Google says 3-3.5 hours. Count on 4. The road goes through Cañas and then up through the mountains via Tilarán — winding roads, possible fog, and slow trucks. After the lake it's a straight shot to La Fortuna. Beautiful drive with Arenal Volcano waiting at the end.

If you land in the morning, you'll be in La Fortuna for a late lunch. The drive around Lake Arenal is one of my favorite stretches in the country — green mountains, the lake, and then boom, Arenal Volcano appears. Ask your driver to stop at the lake viewpoint near Nuevo Arenal. Trust me, get a photo there.
